Cosmos Technologies, Inc., on behalf of the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) and the Sports & Exhibition Authority (SEA), performed a detailed drainage and stormwater management analysis for the Lower Hill Redevelopment, an approximate 28 acre site located in the Lower Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. The development in progress includes mixed-use, residential, retail/ commercial, office, hotel, structured parking, and open spaces. The specific District Planning and Design goals were to create a sustainable new development in an urban context.

This project established a new standard for the design and construction of large-scale sustainable development in accordance with LEED for neighborhood development (LEED-ND) addressing stormwater concerns. Cosmos provided hydraulic and hydrologic assessment and recommendations for the design of the sustainable greenway streets and open spaces. The streets in the Lower Hill Site Redevelopment are designed to help meet the requirements to capture the 95th rainfall runoff within the street right-of-way by using infiltration / tree planters. These sustainable streets are capable of accommodating the first 1.2 inches of rainfall.
